In the 2018 Amateur Draft, the Cardiff Dragons took 18-year old right fielder Sammy Renwick with the overall first pick.

Many observers expected pitcher Douglas Hardman to go first, but he was passed over by both the Dragons and the Manchester Comets, who took pitcher Kieran Pringle. Hardman was eventually drafted third, by the Glasgow Leopards.

The first round in full went as follows:

Pick 1 - Cardiff Dragons:
RF Sammy Renwick

Pick 2 - Manchester Comets:
SP Keiran Pringle

Pick 3 - Glasgow Leopards:
SP Douglas Hardman

Pick 4 - Liverpool Dockers:
SP John MacAlonie

Pick 5 - Dublin Harps:
SP Finlay MacMillan

Pick 6 - Bristol Bulls:
SP Ulick McQuhirrie

Pick 7 - Dublin Harps:
CF Charles Farrell

Pick 8 - Dublin Harps:
SP Bradley Buckeridge

Sammy Renwick is a good choice, Hardman is over-rated in my opinion.
